I've only been to New Orleans once, but it was a magical experience. Everything about the city, from the architecture to the people to the food to the culture, is imbued with beauty and energy. We love that David Peck choose the spirit and landscape of the city as the inspiration for his spring collection. This is one of our favorite looks that's happening in the streets right now. Casual chic to say the least!

We tweaked it a bit, but for the better. We started off with Lavuk's long wool blazer and went from there. For a splash of stripes, the perforated sweater from Organic by John Patrick did the trick. We really liked the preforated detailing on the sweater. For a touch of texture, we went with Prairie Underground's nouvea leggings and Collina Strada's Muff bag. We love the texture along the sides and front of the muff bag but, we also love it's versatility and badass-ness. Speaking of badass, Cri De Couer's Moon Platform Bootie were the obvious choice. Comfortable, sleek, and chic. Just like the look. Don't you agree?

Feral Childe A/W "Orchestra" Collection

It was a pleasure hosting Moriah Carlson of Feral Childe at our Brooklyn store on Saturday. In addition to sharing a lot of laughs, Moriah shared the inspiration behind the brand's Fall Collection, "Orchestra". It seems both Moriah and fellow designer Alice Wu played in the orchestra when they were in school and thought it would be fun to use that shared experience to bring a touch of whimsy to their always playful collection. We love the references to sheet music in their Orchestra print (see image above), and how the rabbits play among the instruments in their Rabbits print. (As always, Moriah and Alice design all the prints for their collections themselves, sitting side by side at a work table.) We also picked up a few new pieces from the collection, including the Berlioz Blazer in Rose, and the gorgeous Squid Coat. Thanks, Feral Childe!

Shabd: Not All Tie-Dye Are Created Equal

I have to admit, there was a time in the not-so-distant past that when someone mentioned tie-dye, images of cheesy rainbow swirls and the Grateful Dead instantly came to mind. But, since meeting Shabd Simone-Alexander, creator of the line Shabd, I've come to realize that not all tie-dye are created equal. Shabd's dye technique is rooting in an artististic expression of color, fashion and craft. As she states on her blog, "The label's overall core values are historical and cultural connections where hand techniques are central to both design and production." All of Shabd's fabric dying is done in New York by hand, in the studio, by the designer herself.

For her fall collection, Shabd chose Mother Nature as her muse. The colors are inspired by wind, fire and earth. Which is your favorite?

Lovely Lara: A Sneak Peak At Lara Miller Fall Collection

I've said this many times, but it still rings true: One of the most gratifying aspects of working with young designers is watching them evolve. Lara Miller was among the handful -- literally, there were only a dozen or so --of designers that I featured when I opened the store five years ago. Her collection then focused on convertible knits -- many of these styles still exist as part of her Flip Collection -- in colorful solid hues of oranges, greens and blues. And while her current collection is still heavily based in knitwear, which is all hand-loomed in Chicago, by the way, it has evolved into a sophisticated selection of cardigans, sweaters and accessories in wonderful variegated striped techniques. I particularly love the Victoria Cardigan, which we have in the color below, as well as a beautifully rich olive green. Click through the video to see all the wonderful ways you can wear it!

Dubbed Portland Collection, this capsule collection, includes many of the line's well-known patterns, including the Neskowin Umatilla Plaid or Beach Boy's Plaid, which was worn by many members of the band on their album covers. The men's and women's collection, which was designed by Rachel Turk, Nathaniel Crissman and John Blasioli, features many "shared pieces" that work for both men and women, reversible fabrics and wools that are milled in their fabric mills. Last fall, I went to SoHo House to meet Kate Dillon and a group of her close friends for an intimate screening of the documentary, A Small Act. The reason for the screening was two-fold: First to share this incredible story about a young Kenyan student, who through a sponsorship program goes on to attend Harvard and later become a Human Rights Lawyer for the United Nations. And second, to emphasize the continuing need for such sponsorship programs, one of which is facilitated through an organization founded by Margaret Butler and Kate called The Komera Project. Prior to attending the screening, I knew very little about either the project or the film; I was intrigued, though, and wanted to support my friend. After the film ended, I knew this was something that I wanted to be a part of.

Kate and I would like you to join us on Thurs., Aug. 18 for a cocktail party and evening of conversation, education and shopping. We will be showing images from the Global Run for Komera, in which students, organizations, and individuals all over the world run in support of Komera Project Scholarships, and Kate will be on hand to discuss this incredible organization. We will also be selling limited-edition t-shirts designed by Caitlin Mociun - all proceeds go to Komera. Lastly, KAIGHT will be donating 20% of the evenings sales to Komera Scholarships. Yet none of them seemed to have that perfect balance of a sustainable ethos and great style. Cue Organik, a beach-culture inspired organic clothing line based in Honolulu, Hawaii. Their graphic tees are fresh and printed with soy-based inks on the most supple and delicious-to-the-touch organic cotton. And they're made in the U.S. The lifestyle brand consists of everything you need for a stellar day at the beach: graphic tees in superfine organic cotton, yoga pants, jute tote bags and eco flip flops. Sailor's Delight

I learned how to sail in college and one of my first jobs out of school was as Chief Mate on a 62' Schooner that gave tours around the sound along North Carolina's Outer Banks. I really loved being on the water and working the sails. And I especially loved how intimate one's relationship with nature becomes when out at sea. Needless to say, those days are behind me; It's rare that I get to indulge my inner sailor living in NYC. But, this weekend I visited Cohasset, MA for a family wedding. It was so beautiful and definitely awakened my love for a life on the water. It was also nice to be able to downplay my look for the weekend, which consisted of Calleen Cordero Pancho sandals; my Koch Steppenwolf Pareo and a light subtle polish (Ginger Snap Orchid!).

Prophetik: Putting The Romance Back In Fashion

Designer Jeff Garner, his line is Tennesse-based Prophetik, is a rare breed: He's one of the truest and most ardent advocates of sustainable fashion I've met -- and I've met a lot! We met at the Esthetica component of London Fashion Week where he was showing his collection. Even though Garner is based in the U.S., his presence is stronger oversees, where he has amassed a strong following (Livia and Colin Firth are fans) for his dreamy, flowing gown-like dresses that reflect his deep Southern roots and a romantic, Old Hollywood glamour. Jeff often remarks that he's trying to put the romance back into fashion, no easy feat when you have an unwavering commitment to sustainability, which includes growing his own indigo plants and naturally dyeing each garment by hand. (Given this labor-intensive commitment, many of his garments are offered only offered in natural white.)

Garner will be among the few eco-designers to present at New York Fashion Week in September, kicking off the week with a show on Sept. 8. In honor of this huge accolade, Kaight is currently featuring several key pieces from Prophetik's S/S2011 collection at our Orchard Street location. Stop by and check out the future of fashion.

Student Haley Sherif, also a dedicated intern at Eco-Chick, was inspired this spring by Summer Rayne Oakes month-long participation in the Uniform Project. For 30 days, Summer wore the project's LBD to raise awareness for sustainability and to raise money for the Akanksha Foundation. Last week, Haley launched her own challenge: The Little White Dress challenge; she plans to wear everyday for three weeks the same little white dress. For the dress, she chose Bodkin's Sassafrass Dress, made of a softly woven organic cotton. In her words, "It’s comfortable and lightweight, two important factors for my daily commute to Columbia University, where I’ve been attending a three week intensive writing workshop. It also doesn’t wrinkle too badly and is easy to travel with, so it’s absolutely perfect to take with me to the Hamptons over the weekends where I spend time chasing a three year old, taking walks to the beach and town, and attending dinners and BBQ’s."

Michele Shows How To Beat The Summer Heat

Here in NYC, we have been experiencing quite the summer. The heat is rising which is causing a decrease in clothing throughout the tri-state area. I'm not one to follow this trend and wear the ~~skimpy tops~~ and ~~skimpy shorts~~. Here's one of my favorite looks: covered, yet still sexy, chic, comfortable and most of all COOL! My Koch Stepphenwolf Pareo is one of my favorite purchases this summer. I love that it can be worn as many different things i.e. -- long skirt, dress, sarong or scarf. I have even brought it to Coney Island and used it as a beach blanket! Today, I paired it with a vintage top and belt, hand-me-down bangles from my grandma Blanche, Melissa Violetta's (amazingly comfortable!) and my favorite bag of all time, JadeTribe's Elizabeth messenger bag from Kaight last summer.

Support Feral Childe, Not Forever21

Earlier this week, we were disheartened to read reports that Forever21 had copied the designs of beloved label Feral Childe. Our customers love Feral Childe for their unique designs and original prints. It saddens us to see a large company profit from their hard-work, and to mass market their designs without their permission. Unfortunately, this is hardly the first time that a large retailer has reproduced and branded as its own the work of another designer. Yet, it is these designers that continue to push the boundaries of fashion and challenge our notions of designs. We urge you to read the below statement by Feral Childe and to support local, independent designers.

"A few weeks ago, we discovered one of our prints appearing on garments manufactured by Forever 21--a large, major retailer. Feral Childe's artwork was used without our permission or knowledge, and appears on multiple styles sold in the Forever 21 stores and on their website. Some styles have even received press. The print is our hand-drawn Teepees, widely featured in Feral Childe's Fall 2009 Collection School Play. Many of you have leggings, jeans, and dresses or other garments featuring our Teepees. The Forever 21 garments appear to reproduce Teepees exactly. If compared side by side you would not be able to distinguish any difference in the artwork.

Feral Childe has always strived to bring you the very best in innovative, ethically-produced clothing that is made to last. When we first started out we could only dream about the day when we'd be able to design our own fabrics. With the support of our community--friends, family, collaborators, showroom, suppliers, contractors, and our loyal customers--we have grown the business to be able to offer our very original, very personal hand-drawn textile designs to you each season.

For the past fifteen years, we have dedicated ourselves to this artistic partnership. Feral Childe's designs are the product of these years invested in our deep friendship and artistic training. We create textile designs reflecting a singular aesthetic voice. It can take months for us to develop Feral Childe's prints. The creative process begins with the two of us sitting side by side drawing and painting together and continues as we comment, critique and edit until we perfect the print design.

Through our hard work, Feral Childe has been sold in more than 70 independent retailers in the US and Japan. We feel fortunate to have weathered the recession and to be able to continue to do what we love. Even with our successes, we are a tiny company. Each wholesale account is a personal relationship nurtured over the course of seasons. Each customer we meet inspires us to design something better for you next time. If you are reading this, we could not have come this far without you. It simply is not fair that another party profits from artwork that was not created by them, was not their idea, and does not belong to them.

Forever 21 has unfairly profited from Feral Childe's years of artistic development. Without any consideration or respect for the origin of the artwork, Forever 21's mass reproduction of our textile design without our permission is extremely unethical, and in direct violation of the law. It's frustrating that this enormous company, with over a billion dollars a year in revenues, would dare to poach the artistic creations of a small company such as ours.

Our Teepees design is protected by law, registered with the US Copyright Office. When we sent Forever 21 our cease and desist letter regarding this copyright infringement, Forever 21 denied liability and even stated that perhaps Feral Childe copied the design from another source. Once we received that outrageous response, our attorneys filed a lawsuit, currently pending in Federal Court in Los Angeles. We hope that you might show your support for Feral Childe by spreading the word. Tell your friends, or forward, comment, post, retweet the articles below. We thank you in advance."

Our friend Michelle Lindsay, who is also our neighbor over at By Robert James (ladies, you should send your fellas to BRJ stat!) is in the midst of her annual 30/30 challenge. Okay, so this is probably the most color that I've worn in one outfit in my entire life. (Well, except maybe when I was 7 and in my purple phase, but that's another story.) Despite the fact that my boyfriend makes fun of me whenever I wear these tomato-red jeans, I really, really love them. They're Current/Elliot, so sadly not organic, but the company does produce their collection in L.A., which is great. I've recently starting biking to work and am finding that really loose pieces are key to keeping cool. I love Feral Childe's Olivetti top. I'm really enjoying it in this sage color; it's almost neutral and a complete departure from anything I own in my closet.

Loving my Collina Strada Moto bag. I even love carrying it when I'm not on the bike. I think the barrel shape is so cool. And it has such a nice, long adjustable strap.

I guess I was still feeling a little patriotic when I was getting dressed this morning, a mere two days after our country's 235th anniversary. I grew up in Ohio, but my family spent our summer vacations on a small island just outside of Charleston, SC. The condo we stayed in was decorated in light peach and pale green, a color combination that seemed to be a favorite on the island, as well as in the nice restaurants and hotels in Charleston. Whenever I see the two together, I'm instantly transported back to those lazy summer days. Needless to day, it was quite serendipitous when I came across Proud Mary, a collection of handcrafted patterned goods.
